LOCATION

The Transkei (formally an independent homeland under the Apartheid Government) but now part of Eastern Cape of South Africa, is the ancestral home to the Xhosa People the picturesque Wild Coast. It is also the birthplace of former South African President, Nelson Mandela.

The remote shoreline  of the Wild Coast reaches from the Kei River Mouth in the south to Port Edward in the north. Long stretches of pristine beaches are broken by pockets of lush sub-tropical vegetation where rivers empty into the warm Indian Ocean.

The beautiful natural environment comprises open grasslands and rolling hills dotted with clusters of traditional Xhosa houses. The Transkei is still untouched by modern development and rural villages appear to be lost in time. This is a place where magic, folk lore and superstition still makes up the majority of the peoples' culture and believe.

Poverty is a major problem in rural areas and HIV has affected many families, leaving extended family members to take care of children. Grandmothers often raise children while parents are either deceased or live in cities where the hopes of job opportunities are possible.

We are here.
